Challenging the "Grandparent Entitlement" Mindset with Rosalba Fontanez - New Episode
Stop expecting your children to make you a grandparent

You’ve no doubt heard the saying “only the best moms get promoted to grandma.” I didn’t even have to finish typing in that phrase into Google to get it to find me all sorts of mugs, t-shirts, throw pillows, and even bumper stickers adorned with it.
It’s one more part of the toxicity and bullshit in our culture that La Vida Más Chévere is here to help dismantle and eradicate.
If this topic sounds familiar that’s because it’s a re-release of an older episode, but the topic is both timely (given Non-Mom May) and timeless, because it’s always childfree bingo season.
Guest Rosalba Fontanez is my mom, and today she’s talking primarily to the parents of other childfree people, to strip away the idea that every parent is entitled to become a grandparent.
It’s a much-needed mindset shift for those parents hounding their childfree kids for grandkids. As she’ll tell you, it’s “not cool” to blame your children if you’re feeling victimized by not being a grandparent.
Sage and wise lady that she is, she also offers alternative options to parents experiencing these feelings of loss, including recognizing that everyone has their own purpose and mission. And once people recognize that their own children's purpose and mission can include many other fulfilling possibilities, that isn't only limited to bearing more children, they then allow space for so much more.
After listening to this episode, you'll have a better understanding of:
- why the toxic mindset of entitlement to grandchildren needs to be abolished
- how it's not necessary to have biological grandchildren to feel fulfilled, and instead consider volunteering or spending time with other children in need
- how people who choose not to have children shouldn't feel pressured or victimized by others' expectations
If you've ever been bingoed by your own parents (or grandparents), you might want to share this episode with them. Because maybe hearing it from one of their own peers might help them understand why being childfree is so important to you.
