As you’ve no doubt been constantly reminded, Mother’s Day is around the corner.
In the US, it’s always the second Sunday in May, so this year that lands on May 14, 2023.
And if you’re not a mom, don’t have a mom, or have a strained relationship with your mother, that day might feel kinda heavy. I know people whose emotions range from indifference to anger to sadness.
And all of that is valid.
This year, I’d like to offer you an alternative: how about we celebrate Non-Mom May instead?
Let me explain.
Hi, I’m Paulette and I’m a non-mom.
That’s just another way of saying that I’m childfree. But wanna know what’s really ironic?
My mom, who I adore, is Mexican.
Unlike here in the US, in Mexico (and Guatemala, El Salvador and Belize) they celebrate El Día de la Madre, Mother’s Day, on a fixed day: May 10th.
Guess what day I was born!
MAY 10TH!
My mom even has a crude joke about it (which I’ll share on the podcast).
Yeah, Mother’s Day is actually my birthday.
And I LOVE birthdays!🎉🎂🥳
I also love sharing the joy of celebrating with everyone!
I’m not kidding (lol). Here are some other episodes I’ve recorded on the topic:
My Proposal:
Instead of dreading the upcoming holiday, I say we all look forward to celebrating May 10th together as a reminder that we are all living our vidas más chévere—our best lives!
Is this my way of inviting you to a month-long virtual birthday party? Yes!
So does that mean there’s something in it for you? Also yes!
All of my programming (podcast episodes and posts here on Substack) will revolve around the non-mom theme—including an episode with my own mom Rosalba and her take on grandparent entitlement.
You might be surprised to hear what this little Mexican lady had to say to other parents that demand grandkids.
She’s my shero!
Here’s what you can look forward to:
3 episodes this month, including 2 interviews with childfree women, one who wanted kids and one who vehemently did not
discussions about shame especially around sex, an emotion far too prevalent in a Latina’s life
a replay of my favorite episode to date: a chat with my mom about what it’s like for her to have a childfree kid herself (this is where I’ll let you in on the crude joke)
extended discussions for each podcast episode right here on the LVMC Substack
Stay tuned and I hope this brings you a little bit of relief from the onslaught of reminders that a certain Sunday in May is coming.
And if we’re really lucky, we can make it an annual thing!*

*This also isn’t an either-or situation. You can celebrate both Mother’s Day with whomever fills that role for you AND yourself with Non-Mom May!
