New Episode: The Dangers of Calladita Se Ve Más Bonita
How toxic cultural ideals perpetuate harmful gender norms
Want to get right to this week’s podcast episode? Check out The Dangers of Calladita Se Ve Más Bonita with Pam Covarrubias on your favorite app.
That phrase, calladita se ve más bonita: what does it mean? Roughly translated it means you’re only pretty if you’re silent.
Imagine hearing that as a child, that you’re so much more attractive as a person if you just shut the hell up. That you should never speak up, never question the way things are, never sully your beauty because that’s your only worth.
Enough Latinas and Latines did hear this growing up that it’s led to generations of our people staying quiet and submissive. Even if you’re from a different culture, I’m sure this sounds familiar to you too.
We wonder why so many women talk about finding their voice later in life…it’s because these oppressive and harmful ideals are constantly perpetuated and reinforced by so many of our societal norms.
Like gender norms.
On this week’s episode of the podcast, my guest Pam Covarrubias and I discuss how this toxicity and BS in our culture affects so many of us. And how she has begun to dismantle that through her business coaching, her podcast Cafe Con Pam, and the journey to reclaiming her own voice.
We also tackle a statistic my childfree friends might find hard to swallow: that mothers are 60% more productive than non-mothers. As a person who preaches productivity AND rest, Pam came to find out it was true for her.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to have kids to be more productive. The secret is intentionality, but you can hear more about it in the episode. Plus learn about mushroom coffee, the love only dogs can give, and finding your confidence.
Question of the week: what are your friendships like with those who have kids and those who don’t?
That’s a burrito!
