Oral Storytelling Podcasts
Including stories from ordinary citizens, to lovers of scary folklore, encompassing the funny and nostalgic in Volume 7 of ¡El Playlist!
This week’s recommendations come in both languages, and include a little something for El Spooky season. And head’s up, something familiar is coming back on Thursday, just in time for Halloween!
Latin@ Stories
Latin@ Stories is a podcast born out of the oral history project about Latin@s in Ohio, Oral Narratives of Latin@s in Ohio (ONLO). It seeks to amplify the Latin@ experience with interviews in Spanish, English and Spanglish.
Listen to Latin@ Stories here.
Recommended episode: with over 200 to choose from, concentrating on different regions of the US, there’s lots to choose from. I enjoyed Episode 219 La Botánica: Connecting with our Indigenous foods.
Susto
Susto is a podcast of ooky-spooky scary stories centered around the folklore of Latinx and Hispanic cultures. Hosted by Adrian...or Ayden. Either way!
Recommended episode: of the nearly 60 episodes, the one titled Sana Sana Colita de Rana was of course where I started. It’s not a particularly scary episode, but still good content from Adrian…or Ayden.
La Hoguera
Conoce el LORE y las HISTORIAS más curiosas, recónditas e interesantes de los Videojuegos en un agradable formato de 🎧 y 📼
Translation: Get to know the LORE and the most curious, hidden and interesting STORIES of Video Games in a pleasant 🎧 and 📼
Recommended episode: La Hoguera means the bonfire, and all the episodes are in Spanish. As a old school console “gamer” (I don’t currently game, but have fond memories of our old Nintendo), my pick is for Mario Bros.: La Película (spoilers) | ep.122.
To Be Continued with Cristela Alonzo
Hello! You might've ended up here because you're familiar with my Netflix stand-up specials "Lower Classy" or "Middle Classy." Maybe you were a fan of my sitcom "Cristela" or you saw "Cars 3" and thought, "I NEED to follow this yellow car!" Look, let's be real. For all I know, you're here because we used to date or we went to school together and you wanted to see what I was up to before you went asleep (we've all been there). To Be Continued is my podcast that mixes sketch, social commentary and well, really whatever comes to my mind. That's part of the fun. It's a conversation I have with you that never ends...thus the title: To Be Continued.
Listen to To Be Continued here.
Recommended episode: started way back in 2016, even though uploads are sporadic, there are a LOT of episodes to choose from. So to continue the thread started with Susto, my choice is EPISODE 21: St. Vicks Vaporub - The Saint Of Healing On A Budget. Cuz IYKYK.
