By now you’ve undoubtedly heard about the “comedian” at the Klan Nazi MAGA rally on Sunday night calling Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage.
He had the mediocre white male audacity to do it smack in the middle of New York City. At the storied Madison Square Garden, where my brothers’ beloved Knickerbockers play basketball.
The response from around the world on my social feeds was fierce and immediate. I opened Threads to this solidarity:
So I’m taking this opportunity to remind you that even if you’re a dyed-in-wool, hard-core small government advocate and diehard 2A supporter who runs around town in your super patriotic camo gear, drinking low calorie American beer with your buddies, if you’re part of any minority group, such as:
women
non-white
non-straight
then to the MAGAs you’re nothing more that a useful idiot.
Project 2025 will effectively erase your existence and remove your rights if you don’t fall within their very narrow worldview of who is even allowed to exist. Sorry gays and theys, it’s back into the closet for you!
Us brown people? LOL.
Like many native Angelenos, I’m an American citizen of Latine descent, but do you think they won’t try to have me deported? Or rounded up and put in a camp like they did to people in the 1940s? Those internment camps were all over California and filled with American citizens. Tuna Canyon Detention Station is literally 20 mins from where I was born.
American citizenship was not automatic to Puerto Ricans in the beginning. Spain surrendered the island to the US in the 1898 Treaty of Paris but Puerto Ricans didn’t receive citizenship until 1917.
Right around the time the US needed more able-bodied soldiers for a land war in Europe. Convenient isn’t it?
Politicos dismiss the island because Puerto Ricans on the island cannot vote in presidential elections. But nearly 6 million of us live on the mainland, in the diaspora, and beyond. And you know what? We can vote.
And we will.

If you said you understand the assignment, then remember to turn it in! You have 7 days left to vote.
